Bases Loaded with Knowledge: A Day with the Mets at Citi Field
What happens when you mix Sports Broadcasting students, Monroe’s talented baseball team, and a powerhouse MLB franchise like the New York Mets? You get a once-in-a-lifetime learning experience that our students will never forget.
Students in our new Sports Broadcasting course and members of the Mustangs baseball team were recently given a front-row seat to the fast-paced world of professional sports media -- literally. Accompanied by faculty members Professor Dorothy Toran, Professor Jacob Huddleston, Dr. Taren Mitchell, and Professor Dreena Whitfield, the group was invited by Donovan Mitchell, Senior Director of Community, Inclusion and Player Relations for the New York Mets, for an exclusive behind-the-scenes visit to Citi Field.
A Day at the Ballpark ... And So Much More
The day kicked off with an unforgettable opportunity: attending a live press conference with Mets General Manager Carlos Mendoza, where students witnessed first-hand how media professionals field questions, manage narratives, and represent a major league team under pressure.
In a standout moment, Mendoza gave a special shoutout to Monroe’s only female baseball player, Yedlimar De Jesus, inviting her up to the press stage for a photo op that drew cheers and applause from the room. Talk about making headlines!
After the conference, students soaked in the electric atmosphere of a Mets vs. Padres matchup, all while enjoying Mets hospitality and refreshments, courtesy of our generous hosts.
“This trip was so much more than a day at the stadium,” said Dorothy Toran, who helped coordinate the visit. “We are very grateful to Donovan Mitchell and the Mets organization for giving our Monroe University Entertainment Media and Marketing students a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of a professional sports team media experience.”
From watching press strategies unfold in real time to connecting with key decision-makers in the industry, the experience was a perfect example of our Entertainment Media program in action -- putting students in real-world scenarios to help build the skills, connections, and confidence they need to succeed.
This terrific experience exemplifies our ongoing commitment to empowering students through real-world opportunities that connect classroom learning to meaningful, career-defining experiences. At Monroe, we don’t just prepare students for the industry -- we take them there.
