Monroe MBA Students Achieve Global Top 50 Rankings in GLO-BUS Business Strategy Simulation

Monroe’s MBA students are making waves in the global business education arena.

Students in Dr. Michael Altamirano’s MBA capstone course earned prestigious Global Top 50 rankings in the internationally competitive GLO-BUS business strategy simulation, held from July 14–20, placing them among the highest-performing teams from more than 1,500 course sections and 300 institutions worldwide.

GLO-BUS simulates the challenges of running an international company, tasking students with managing operations across four global regions: Europe-Africa, North America, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. In the simulation, students took on executive roles in a digital camera company and made critical decisions across research and development, production, finance, and marketing, competing against student teams around the world.

Unlike traditional case studies or lectures, GLO-BUS provides a dynamic, real-world experience that supports the principles of strategic management, said Dr. Altamirano.

“Students act as co-managers of a company, making decisions about everything from research and development to production, pricing, marketing, and financial control in a competitive global market,” he said. “This active learning process allows students to practice strategic thinking and decision-making in a safe environment where they can see the direct consequences of their strategic choices.”

Despite initial skepticism about the competition, Sajid Khan was among Monroe’s students who consistently ranked in the top 50 global performers throughout the semester.

“We all learn about the core departments like marketing, finance, and operations, but this simulation allowed me to actually experience them firsthand,” Khan said. “I managed all departments, and since marketing is my strength, I was especially excited to use my skills in product placement.”

Khan said employing principles he learned in his MBA program allowed his business to gain market share and focus on the company’s financial health, while honing his teamwork and leadership skills.

“My aggressive strategies paid off. I placed in the top 50 for three consecutive periods and ultimately secured the top spot,” he said. “This experience gave me a lot of confidence, not just because I won, but because I learned how much I can accomplish in areas I was previously unsure about.”

Monroe teams earned top rankings across the GLO-BUS simulation, placing within the Top 50 worldwide in key financial and strategic performance categories, including Return on Average Equity (ROE), Earnings Per Share (EPS), Stock Price, and Overall Game-to-Date Score.
